  • Saving the Amazon Rainforest

    This unit will be presented to students by showing the video, "Forest Family Forever." to facilitate student comprehension on the importance of the rainforest. The teacher will lead a discussion about the different animals, plants and indegenous people that make the rainforest their home. The teacher will present students with a list of vocabulary words for the unit. Students will write a reflection sentence on their feelings of the importance of the rainforest in their journal. More sentences will be added at the end of the unit. Students will demonstrate their understanding of story elements and the plot that describes conflict/problem. The teacher will discuss the objectives prior to reading and use the reading of 'The Great Kapok Tree', as an analogy to "Forest Family Forever", saving the rainforest. Students will discover the conflict with character vs. character and character vs. nature when a twoodsman was going to chop down a Kapok tree.This unit will provide opportunities to meet the needs of students who are auditory, visual and kinesthetic.
  • Researching Online for the Term Paper Project

    Part One—choose topic and research questions-assigned in English class about 10 school days prior to beginning this lesson computer class, completed as homework, and brought to the computer lab for the rest of the assignment. Activities include interactive whiteboard lesson, Internet search, adding data to tables I provided printing relevant research. Students will use this research as part of a larger unit on writing the research paper in English. Because logging into the public library databases requires a card number, I include in a letter to parents at the beginning of the year that students are required to have a valid library card. Library cards are free.
  • What's for Lunch? ( 1 of 3 lessons)

    Students will compare and contrast hervivores, carnivores, omnivores, and decomposers.

    Students locate specific areas and reference the soil types that are present at those locations -- soil survey map
  • Troublesome Trash

    Students will make predictions about the sort of items routinely disposed of by individuals in their community and the biodegradability of those products--landfill, recycling
  • Using the Internet in Problem Solving

    Students will plan and budget a vacation -- budget, itinerary, writing, scoring guide
  • Slippery Slopes

    Students measure the local terrain and calculate the percent slope of the landscape--erosion, surveying, surveyor''s level, surveyor''s rod
  • Producing Profitable Products!

    Students prepare a recipe for mass production and figure out the financial aspects of producing their products. They will also prepare a marketing slogan presenting their product.
