  • Adding & Subtracting Fractions

This unit of study covers computations with fractions based on conceptual understanding. Prior knowledge includes determining order of fractions, benchmark understanding (0, 1/2, 1) and a variety of experiences with fractions and percents. This unit takes that understanding and creates opportunities for students to build their understanding of performing computations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with fractions.

  • American Idol Math

Students will complete various forms of graphs using Excel, Word, or other data generating program to graph data from American Idol or another data-driven reality show. They will also be expected to calculate mean, median, and mode on the weekly data collected. Finally, the will be expected to write a summary of each weeks’ results and give a brief reason for the voting outcome. (ex.. performance, judges comments, contestant’s attitude, etc…) With their explanation the students need to form an opinion as to whether the judges’ comments had an impact on the vote that week. Finally students will create a product of their choice to show how data collection is used in daily lives to make decisions.
  • What are the Effects of Global Warming?

    • Developing a mathematical model to fit collected data.
    • Use the mathematical model to analyze data about a real life situation.
    • Develop and analyze a hypothesis about a real life situation.
    • Use of the scientific method for study design.
  • Constructivist Lesson Math Books

Students will teach a math concept to other students by identifying examples in the real world and creating a math literature book.
  • How will you spend $600 in our state, Missouri?

In order to analyze data to make decisions, people must make predictions, collect data, illustrate data, and explain/justify the criteria they use to make decisions.
  • Cubist Geometry

  • Did You Know?

Teams of 2 or 3 student will create and influential commercial about a hot topic. They will research and find date about their topic and then manipulate the numbers so that everyone can understand. Use statistics to help others understand data.
  • Making Bar Graphs

Students will use data to make a chart and bar graphs.
  • Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
