      G.L.E.:

Time Allowance: 1 hour in class, 1 week at home.

Description: Research coats of arms on line. Reflect upon your interests & personality to create a coat of arms. Finally, present your shield to class. Peers respond by completing a listening exercise about the shield''s symbolism.

      Classroom Component:

An excellent means of incorporating cultural investigation, technology and new vocabulary. Students also review key basic concepts and practice oral presentation/listening skills. This project could also be cross-curricular with Art, Social Studies and Oral Communications classes.

      Day One:

Students visit computer lab to research coats of arms. Using WEBQUEST adventure sheet (attached) students complete information about royal coats of arms and their meanings. Students will also investigate various symbols, colours and layouts of coats of arms used in a variety of world cultures. (Note: while attachments are created for Spanish, they lend themselves to any world language)

      Days 2-5:

Using their discoveries, students will create their own coat of arms. This may be made from paper, powerpoint or as another artistic interpretation (flags, cake, painting or textile). Students should prepare their presentations in written format, some students may wish to use advance (attached) organizer to communicate meaning behind their coat of arms. IMPORTANT: Distribute RUBRIC in advance of presentation so students are aware of expectations. You should discuss with students how to incorporate all the elements of their research into their own personal coat of arms presentation. Students should use yesterday''s worksheet as a guide to script their presentation in the target language. A reminder to discourage students from scripting in English and translating as an afterthought will result in better presentations and less frustration in understanding from peers. Also, teachers may wish to direct students to specific sections in their textbooks to find appropriate vocabulary, and review uses of SER vs ESTAR and ME GUSTA verbs.

      Day 6:

Students will present their coat of arms to the class in target language. Classmates will respond by completing listening guide that outlines various interests and personal qualities of their peers.

Students will be assessed in four areas:

      1) Summary of findings of their on line research.

      2) Visual presentation of their coat of arms.

      3) Presentational/speaking skills.

      4) Listening skills.
