Time Allowance: 1-2 class periods
Description: Students will discover the pattern and relationship of ideas in the examples provided in the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry - concept attainment, cooperative groups
Classroom Component:
LESSON DESIGN - Concept Attainment/Fact and Opinion COMPONENT - Activity MENTAL SET - "At the Bell" Journal Activity Discuss a time when you were blamed for something that someone else did. How did you feel? Did you seek revenge? Why or why not? SHARING OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE - Read chapter 6 & 7 of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry By participating in the concept attainment activity and working cooperatively, students will discover the pattern and relationship of ideas in the examples provided. INPUT - Concept Attainment Activity - Fact and Opinion Using the overhead projector, present the examples one at a time. Ask students for a hypothesis after two or three examples. Ask them to revise their hypotheses after presenting two or three more. Check for understanding (see below) by using test examples. MODELING - Demonstrate identifying fact/opinion in the first paragraphs of the assigned chapter. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING - Students will use thumbs up for clear understanding, thumbs down for not understanding, and thumbs sideways for not sure of understanding. PRACTICE/ GUIDED & INDEPENDENT - Students will read Chapter 6 & 7 of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. As they read, they will find ten examples of statements of fact and ten examples of statements of opinion. CLOSURE - "Ticket Out" Was Stacey justified in seeking his revenge against T.J.? What do you think the consequences of his action will be? CONCEPT ATTAINMENT DATA SET Focus Statement - Consider what the A examples have in common.
