Social Studies/Geography Grade Range: Upper Elementary (4-5) Materials Needed: pencils, Missouri Then and Now textbook, white construction paper (for poster), crayons or markers, notebook paper Objective: This performance task is designed to assess the student''s knowledge of the geography of the four regions of Missouri and the locations of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers in the state of Missouri. The student is asked to write a commercial for the "Show-Me" Travel Agency telling potential visitors why they should visit the four regions of Missouri and what they can see and do in these different parts of the state. The student is also asked to draw a poster to go along with their commercial depicting the four regions of Missouri, as well as the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Finally, the students will be asked to present their commercials to the class. Process Standards:

Time Allowance: Three 45-55 minute periods

Classroom Component:
Administrator's Instructions: Provide students with a Performance Task Packet and read the prompt to ensure the directions are clearly understood. Also go over the criteria to be assessed on the Scoring Guide so students understand how they will be assessed and what a quality task involves. Provide students with the needed materials to complete the task.
Pre-assessment Instructions: The students will need a previous knowledge of the geography of the state of Missouri, as well as prior instructions on map skills.

Student Prompt
You are an agent for "Show-Me" Travel Agency. Your job is to tell customers why they should visit Missouri's four regions, and what they can see and do in the different parts of our state.
You will write a commercial telling three things about each region of Missouri that might be of interest to a visitor. You will also design a poster showing the four regions of Missouri. The locations of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers should also be included in your poster. Finally, you will present your commercial and poster to the class.

3 Point Task - Commercial includes at least three facts about each of the regions of Missouri.
- Poster correctly displays the four regions of Missouri.
- Poster correctly displays the locations of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

- Commercial has no spelling mistakes.
2 Point Task - Commercial includes two facts about each of the regions of Missouri.
- Poster correctly displays at least three of the regions of Missouri.
- Poster correctly displays either the Missouri or Mississippi River.
- Commercial is written in complete sentences with few punctuation mistakes.
- Commercial has few spelling mistakes.
1 Point Task - Commercial includes less than two facts about each of the regions of Missouri.
- Poster correctly displays only two (or less) of the regions of Missouri.
- Poster does not display the location of either the Missouri or Mississippi River.
- Commercial is not written in complete sentences and/or has many punctuation mistakes.
- Commercial has many spelling mistakes.
